Milestone birthdays: 30th, 40th and 50th party ideas that aren’t a hotel buffet
Milestone birthdays get booked late and planned in a panic, which is how so many of them end up in a hotel banquet hall with a buffet. You can do better in an evening of planning if you decide the format first.
Pick a format, then a venue
- Rooftop dinner: 12โ30 people, a set menu, fairy lights, a playlist. The easiest one to pull off well.
- Private screening: a small theatre, the birthday person’s favourite film, popcorn and a cake in the interval.
- Brunch takeover: a cafรฉ on a Sunday morning, bottomless coffee, done by 2pm.
- Game night: a board-game cafรฉ or a bowling alley with a reserved lane block.
- Themed decade party: dress as the year they were born; the venue needs a dance floor and very little else.
Things people forget
- A speech slot. Give it a time, or it happens at the worst possible moment.
- A photo corner with decent light. Phone photos in a dark bar look like a dark bar.
- One non-alcoholic signature drink, so nobody feels left out.
- Transport home. Share the address and a late-night cab plan with the invite.
The best milestone parties are a little smaller than the first guest list. Cut it by a third and everyone gets to talk to the person they came for.
